I want to take you on a journey, to a place that is filled with a hope like nothing you have ever seen. Laughter, pure joy, and community is in the air, determination and passion overcome circumstances, and the vision of a woman given by the one true God is birthed.
In the Huruma Slum in Nairobi Kenya lies a High School. But not just any High School, New Dawn High School. Providing the youth in the slum a future, a hope for what is to come, and a safe haven where they are accepted, seen, and loved unconditionally.
Now I want you to erase anything you may think you know about Africa, Kenya, or Nairobi, because unless you have experienced it first hand, I promise our idea is skewed, not to our own fault, but because of the idea we are given via media. I look forward to the Lord writing through me to give you the true picture of the power of His presence amongst the incredible youth in the Huruma Slum.
We had the opportunity to sit with some of the students one-on-one as well as in a group setting. The first thing we noticed was their love for Christ. Giving thanks to God repeatedly for the opportunity to receive an education. I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t extremely fond of High School, I depreciated the education I was receiving as it is an expectation in the states…It is a blessing here in the Huruma Slum!! They attend school from 7am-6pm with 11 different courses. They are joyous and working overtime to ensure they are fully grasping what they are being taught!
After meeting with these incredible boys and girls we walked with them through the slum to their homes, made of discarded items all built within and on top of one another. We were invited into a young girls home the size of a small 1 car garage, partitioned by a plank of wood and drapes for the sleeping area. There is only dirt for the kids to play in, and they cleanse themselves and their clothing in the river below the slum. My first instinct was to remove these children immediately, this wasn’t okay and they should not live this way…Then God showed up. This is where we have it all wrong!!!!!
The principle of the school spoke during the school assembly saying “little is great when God is in it”. It was in that moment, that I finally grasped the meaning of the verse in Luke 20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”
Those who have much, look for more. Those who have little, look to the heavens. Those who have much try to find satisfaction in purchases, paychecks, and promotions. Those who have little know the true source of Hope and satisfaction, Jesus Christ! Today my friends and I leave with an understanding of what “blessings” truly mean. The greatest blessing we could ever receive is a relationship with God, fully relying on Him and resting in his Mercy and Grace!
Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Seeing is believing – However with Faith, believing is seeing!
Let my friends and I be your eyes, may you take heart in what we have seen and know the message we are sending to you is one only the Lord could provide.
We have heard the phrase a million times “live by faith and not by sight” I am asking you to do just that, by becoming a Mocha Club Member and sacrificing 1-2 mochas a month in order to continue this beacon of hope for the youth in the Huruma Slum. Let us give willingly, not because there is a terrible lack of materialistic things, but because there is an overwhelming understanding of Gods provision, Hope, and Joy that can only be found in Him!
